Stuffed Animal Sleepover Held at Caryville Public Library

On July 30th, twenty-eight brave young children trusted the library with their stuffed animals for the night.  It was a very hard thing for them to do.  For those who could not do it, we provided stuffed animals for them.  There were a few last minute tears and hugs, but then it was done.  One child’s mother told me that her daughter said it was really hard to leave her animal, but that she wanted it to have fun.  The mother told her daughter that it was hard to let her daughter be away from her, too, but that she wanted her to have fun.  It became a teaching moment.  It’s amazing how many facets that story time has.  It’s not just sharing stories and rhymes and doing crafts, but ranges from those early literacy skills (important for success as lifelong learners), to helping very young children become socialized, make lifelong friends, and gain independence that will serve them well when they are older.  I could go on and on!

Children brought their stuffed animals with them to their regular story time with Mrs. Katie.  After it was over, we made name tags for their stuffed animals.  The children read stories to their animals and tucked them in for a nap, as it was rumored that the stuffed animals would be staying up late that night.  After the library closed, the animals woke up to a pizza party!  Cheese pizza was the most popular choice.  Then they proceeded to explore the library, have fun, and make new friends.  Even the smallest animals, like Walker Bobcat and Wubbnub, were unafraid, and Sully from Monsters Inc. was caught snuggling, his big blue and purple arms around the other animals.

They also enjoyed a snack before bedtime, since they stayed up until 1 a.m.!  When the children picked up their animals at the next story time, they were each presented with a book of pictures of what their animals did during the night.  They all found this to be extremely cool, and so did we!

Animals attending were:  Bird, Blue, Bunny, Buzz, Blueberry, Brown Bear, Caleb’s Bear, Chicken, Diamond, Fish, Franklin, Lamby, Lee, Monk, Mouse, Patch, Pinky Bear, Purple, Razberry, Shelby, Star, Starlight, Sully, Tigger wearing a blue shirt, Tigger, Walker Bobcat, White Bear, and Wubbnub.

Special thanks go to Freida, Courtney, and Codi Williams, who tirelessly worked to take pictures of all the animals’ antics!

I hope this idea continues to spread, as every hard working stuffed animal deserves a treat, and so do their precious owners.
